Bioluminescence

While in Baja California in 2008, I first witnessed what was to become my all-time favorite natural biological phenomenon. Along the bay one night, the lapping waves appeared to be made of shining light. This bioluminescence is the result of dinoflagellates present in the surface layers of the sea. When mechanically stimulated (by wave, boat, motion within the water), the dinoflagellates glow electric blue—an enchanting contrast to the blackness of the water at night. This collection is inspired by this phenomenon.

Pavane No.1967

March 2013

This collection is set to Maurice Ravel's gorgeous, classical composition 'Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess)'. Ravel described the piece as "an evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court." I have specifically been listening to mid-century recordings of 'Pavane' by pianists including Sviatoslav Richter and Shura Cherkassky. I imagined how the ladies of the time would have dressed and done themselves up to see such a performance; a refined high-society event at prestigious venues. The collection thus features the decadence and ornamentation of the Renaissance Spanish court in '60s silhouettes.
