The Period Party
The purpose of The Period Party was to culminate the #PledgeYourPeriod campaign to coincide with Menstrual Hygiene Day. The campaign and event sought to celebrate periods in light of the taboo/stigma associated with them, leading to dismal outcomes throughout the world. The event was inspired by the coming-of-age ‘period parties’ that are held in South Indian/Sri Lankan communities.
We were able to create an inclusive safe space in NYC for all people to gather. Guests were given a presentation by me on the Desai Foundation Sanitary Napkin Program, treated to a musical performance by The Musical Doc, and were invited to tell their very own first period stories. Guests posed at the photobooths, enjoyed our sponsored food & chai, and took goodie bags home filled with period-centric items.
As an inaugural event in 2019, we received great feedback from guests about feeling more confident and empowered as a result of the event. They had never attended an event like this, and were happy that it was organized. The Period Party was co-hosted with our partner Brown Girl Magazine, an influential multimedia company created by and for women of South Asian heritage.
My involvement included ideating the event concept, event planning (with assistance from Brown Girl magazine), photobooth design, speech & presentation.
